Australia’s 2022 men’s 100m sprint champion has been arrested in Townsville for alleged indecent treatment of children.

Queensland police arrested Jake Doran on 13 October and he has been charged with one count of “indecent treatment of child under 16 (indecent film etc)”. Police investigations covered the period between January 2025 and September 2026.

The 26-year-old was bailed to appear at Townsville magistrates court on 5 November.

Doran, who works in business development at Tafe Queensland, has been training athletes in Townsville.

Australian Athletics confirmed he has no paid or unpaid role with the national governing body, but has banned him from any involvement in the sport while the matter is ongoing.

“Based on information provided to Australian Athletics, the organisation has imposed a provisional action on the athlete, prohibiting him from attending club, member association or Australian Athletics events, as well as banning him from participating in athletics training,” a spokesperson said.

“The safety and wellbeing of all participants in our sport is paramount, and we take all allegations of this nature very seriously.”

Doran has deleted his Instagram account, and his profile no longer appears on the Australian Athletics website.

Queensland Athletics declined to comment.

A Tafe Queensland spokesperson said: “Based on the information available at this time, the allegations are understood to be unrelated to the individual’s employment with Tafe Queensland, and there is no indication they relate to Tafe Queensland students, staff, training delivery, campus activities or operations.

“The employee has been suspended from duty while the matter is before the courts.”

The sprinter was the winner of the 100m at the Australian national championships in 2022, when he crossed the line ahead of current Australian representative Eddie Nketia in a wind-assisted time of 10.05sec.

Doran went on to compete for Australia at the world championships and Commonwealth Games, and also won the national 200m title in 2023.

He has been unable to replicate his early promise, however, and has not run the 100m faster than 10.39sec since 2023.

Queensland police said investigations continue.

Doran has been contacted for comment.
